Armenia Reports 25.5% Daily Smoking Rate as Youth Vaping Surges
Armenian Ministry of Health official Mariam Mnatsakanyan announced during National Anti-Smoking Day that 25.5% of the country’s adult population smokes daily. While national tobacco use decreased by roughly 8% over the past decade, health authorities face emerging challenges with early youth uptake and expanding e-cigarette usage.
Demographic Gaps and Adolescent Vaping Patterns
Smoking habits across the adult population show a stark gender divide. More than 50% of adult men smoke cigarettes, compared to just 2% of adult women. A parallel disparity exists among minors, with 25% of underage boys and 4% of underage girls using conventional tobacco products.
Electronic cigarettes present a growing challenge among younger demographics. Survey data reveals that 36% of boys and 6% of girls over age 11 have tried e-cigarettes at least once. Initial tobacco experimentation begins as early as age 11, with regular habits typically establishing by age 13.
Oncologists Warn of Long-Term Health Consequences
Dr. Tigran Byuzandyan, head of thoracic surgery at the V.A. Fanardjian National Center of Oncology, warned about the direct link between persistent smoking and severe oncological diseases across vital organs.
“Tobacco use plays the leading role among the causes and risk factors for tumors of the oral cavity, oral mucosa, tongue, larynx, and trachea,” stated Dr. Byuzandyan. He added that while non-smokers can contract lung cancer, the overwhelming majority of clinic patients are long-term male smokers over the age of 50.
