FDA Approval of Flavored Nicotine Pouches Sparks Youth Vaping Concerns
Health advocates warn that youth nicotine exposure will rise following the FDA’s approval of new flavored nicotine pouches. Caroline Joyce of Parents Against Vaping stated that flavored options and easy access are driving youth nicotine use, particularly in states with loose retail regulations like Tennessee.
On August 4, the FDA authorized the marketing of four new nicotine pouch flavors through its Tobacco Review Pilot Program. Advocates argue that flavors are a primary driver of youth tobacco initiation. “These products are highly addictive,” Joyce said. “With the FDA’s authorization of flavored products, we fully expect that we’re going to see an increase in usage amongst youth.”
Retail availability compounds the issue. In Jackson, Tennessee, over 20 stores sell vape products. Tennessee does not require a state retail license or permit to sell tobacco, making it easier for youth to encounter and access these products.
Identifying youth vaping is difficult because symptoms mimic typical teenage behavior. Parents should watch for:
- Changes in mood and increased irritability
- Disrupted sleep patterns
- Loss of interest in usual activities
If parents suspect vaping, Joyce advises starting a calm dialogue. “Using curiosity and coming at them with questions is the best way to open the dialogue,” she said. Under a law effective July 1, underage users caught with nicotine face community service.
