Guyana Bans Recreational Vaping Products
Guyana will restrict the importation of recreational vaping products following domestic and international concerns over adolescent health. President Irfaan Ali announced the pending border controls during a public address, stating that unregulated vape distribution poses direct risks to youth respiratory wellness and brain development.
Restricting Unregulated E-Cigarette Imports
Under the upcoming directive, recreational electronic cigarettes will no longer enter the country legally. The administration is restricting all commercial imports, leaving an exemption pathway solely for verified therapeutic or medicinal applications.
To qualify for this exemption, products must obtain explicit authorization from the Minister of Health, the National Tobacco Control Council, or the Tobacco Control Board prior to arrival at ports of entry.
President Ali noted that this policy aligns Guyana with broader international tobacco control standards:
“This measure is necessary in light of growing concerns over the widespread and unregulated importation, sale and use of vapes and vaping products in Guyana.”
Protecting Adolescents from Nicotine Dependence
The government acted following complaints from parents, educators, and community leaders regarding the spread of electronic devices through primary and secondary schools. Although manufacturers frequently promote electronic devices as alternatives to combustible tobacco, President Ali highlighted World Health Organization findings regarding chemical toxins and adolescent brain chemistry.
“Vaping products can expose users to toxic substances that pose risk to human health,” Dr. Ali stated. “Vaping with all of the other alternative substances is negatively affecting our children and young people. It leads to addiction that can affect brain development in children and adolescents.”
Beyond direct physiological harms, officials noted that early addiction disrupts social development within schools. By cutting off unregulated commercial supply lines at customs checkpoints, the administration intends to halt access across Guyana and the wider Caribbean basin.
