Illinois New Bill to Ban Vaping Inside Public Buildings

Vaping News, Laws and Regulations
Illinois New Bill Ban on Vaping Inside Public Buildings

As the popularity of electronic cigarettes continues to rise, the State of Illinois is taking measures to protect the public’s health. House Bill 1540, which aims to ban the use of e-cigarettes in public buildings, has received bipartisan support and now awaits Gov. JB Pritzker’s signature to become law. So, why is this ban necessary, and how will it affect the people of Illinois? Let’s dive into the details.

The Journey of House Bill 1540

In March, House Bill 1540 passed the House with an 85-22 vote, and it cleared the Senate with a 42-11 vote this week. The bipartisan support demonstrates a united front in tackling the public health concerns surrounding vaping.

House Bill 1540 expands the existing Smoke Free Illinois Act, which already bans smoking in public buildings and within 15 feet of a building’s entrance. The bill now includes e-cigarettes and vapes to protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke exposure.

Sen. Julie Morrison, a Democrat from Lake Forest and sponsor of the bill, believes it is crucial to include e-cigarettes in the Smoke Free Illinois Act because more young people are turning to vaping. This shift poses a threat to public health and must be addressed.

Although e-cigarettes are not traditional cigarettes, their secondhand smoke can still be harmful. Ally Lopshire, Government Relations Director for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, emphasizes that the effects of e-cigarette smoke on the general public should not be underestimated.

The Exceptions to the Rule

The bill permits retail tobacco stores deriving at least 80% of their gross revenue from tobacco or e-cigarette sales to allow indoor smoking of electronic cigarettes on their premises. This exemption provides a space for e-cigarette users without endangering the public.

The Need for Public Protection

Sen. Morrison argues that there’s no reason anyone, from pregnant women to young children, should be exposed to harmful e-cigarette products in public. The bill establishes a clear standard to protect non-smokers and further de-normalize tobacco use.

A Healthier Future for Illinois

By expanding the Smoke Free Illinois Act to include e-cigarettes and vapes, the state takes a significant step in safeguarding public health. With the anticipated implementation of House Bill 1540, Illinois moves closer to a healthier future for all its residents.
