Moldova to Expand Smoking and Vaping Bans with Heavy Fines Starting June 24
The Moldovan government will enforce a sweeping expansion of its public smoking and vaping restrictions starting June 24, 2026. This legislative update targets traditional tobacco, e-cigarettes, and heated tobacco products to drastically reduce public exposure to toxic aerosols.
Under the new regulations, smoking is strictly prohibited in recreational areas like sports grounds, beaches, and water parks, as well as public transport stops. Residential restrictions are also tightening, outlawing smoking in apartment building hallways, elevators, and private balconies. Furthermore, smoking or vaping is banned within 10 meters of public building entrances, open windows, and ventilation systems.
Non-compliance carries heavy penalties:
- Individuals: Fines up to 2,250 lei or 40 to 60 hours of unpaid community service.
- Businesses: Fines up to 15,000 lei and a potential one-year suspension of operations for permitting smoking on their premises.
