Wolverhampton Extends ‘Swap to Stop’ Vaping Program for Another Year
Wolverhampton City Council has announced a 12-month extension of its successful “Swap to Stop” smoking cessation program. The initiative, which provides free vape starter kits and behavioral support, has already helped hundreds of residents quit smoking, reinforcing vaping as a key public health tool in the UK.
Wolverhampton is doubling down on its commitment to harm reduction. The city council has officially confirmed that its highly effective “Swap to Stop” program will run for another 12 months. Originally launched in September 2024, this initiative is a cornerstone of the local public health strategy, offering smokers a pragmatic pathway away from combustible tobacco.
How does the program work? It is simple and direct. Smokers in Wolverhampton are provided with free vape starter kits, removing the financial barrier to switching. But hardware is only half the equation. Participants also receive a structured 12-week behavioral support plan. Trained staff conduct weekly “check-in” sessions at various community venues, ensuring that quitters have the human guidance necessary to navigate their journey away from cigarettes.
The results speak for themselves. In just the first three quarters of the current financial year, 279 residents successfully quit smoking through the program. This success rate has driven the decision to extend funding.
Councillor Obaida Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Community, highlighted the urgency of the initiative. “Stopping smoking is the best thing you can do for your health,” she stated, noting that smoking remains England’s single largest preventable cause of death, claiming around 64,000 lives annually. “The Swap to Stop programme has had a massive impact… I am delighted that we can announce the extension.”
This extension aligns with the broader UK approach of utilizing vaping as a primary cessation tool. Alongside “Swap to Stop,” the council’s “Live Well Wolverhampton” service continues to offer free support to any adult smoker in the city, providing tailored plans that include either vape kits or traditional nicotine replacement therapy.
