Study Reveals CBD + CBDA Paste Improves Mobility in Cats
A new study published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery offers promising news for cat owners dealing with feline mobility issues. ElleVet Sciences, a leader in CBD pet products, has announced the results of a clinical trial analyzing the safety and efficacy of its proprietary CBD + CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) paste formulation. The findings suggest that this specific blend can significantly help cats move more comfortably and enjoy a better quality of life.
Dr. Joseph Wakshlag, chief veterinary medical officer at ElleVet, highlighted the urgency of this research, noting that while many cats suffer from mobility challenges, safe and effective long-term options have been scarce. “Our goal with this research… is to fill a significant void in feline care,” Wakshlag stated. “The improvement reported from vets and cat owners in this study validates our efforts.”
Study Methodology and Key Findings
The randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled crossover study involved 26 client-owned cats over a six-week period. Each cat received both the CBD + CBDA paste and a placebo in sequence. Although 12 cats dropped out due to palatability issues or vomiting, 14 completed the full trial. Researchers used rigorous assessment tools, including orthopedic examinations using the North Carolina State University Translational Research in Pain (TRiP) scoring system and owner questionnaires based on the Dutch Orthopaedic Rating for Feline Osteoarthritis Pain (DORFOP).
The results for the cats that completed the study were statistically significant:
- Improved Mobility: Both veterinarians and owners reported noticeable improvements in specific mobility measures, including gait, navigating stairs, jumping, and play behavior.
- Safety Confirmed: Bloodwork analysis showed no significant safety concerns after six weeks of use, suggesting the formulation is well-tolerated systemically.
Haley Israelson, CEO of ElleVet Sciences, expressed excitement about the publication, emphasizing the company’s “science-first approach” to expanding mobility support options. This study adds to ElleVet’s portfolio of over 20 published clinical trials, reinforcing its position as a pioneer in evidence-based cannabinoid research for pets. While palatability remains a hurdle for some felines, the study provides a validated, non-pharmaceutical option for managing feline mobility issues.
