Study Finds CBD Supplements May Reduce Aggression in Dogs
As the popularity of cannabis-derived products like cannabidiol (CBD) grows among humans for treating various ailments, new research suggests our canine companions might also be reaping significant benefits. A study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science has found that dogs given CBD supplements over a prolonged period showed a notable decrease in aggressive tendencies, highlighting a potential new therapeutic avenue for canine behavioral issues.
Researchers from Arizona State University and the University of Tennessee utilized multi-year data from the Dog Aging Project, a massive community science initiative involving over 47,000 dogs across the United States. By analyzing owner-reported data from 2019 to 2023, the team identified distinct demographic trends among dogs receiving CBD. These dogs tended to be older (on average three years senior to non-users), male, and more likely to suffer from health conditions such as dementia, osteoarthritis, and cancer. Interestingly, dogs living in states where medical cannabis is legal for humans were also more likely to be given these supplements.
The most striking finding, however, related to behavior. “Behaviorally, dogs given CBD products for multiple years are initially more aggressive compared to dogs not receiving those products, but their aggression becomes less intense over time,” explained senior author Dr. Maxwell Leung. This suggests that while owners might initially turn to CBD to manage difficult behaviors, the supplement appears to have a calming effect with sustained use. Co-author Dr. Julia Albright noted that this long-term change underscores CBD’s potential as a therapy for behavioral problems, which are often rooted in stress or anxiety.
While the study did not find a similar reduction in other anxious behaviors like agitation, the specific impact on aggression is significant for both dog welfare and human safety. The researchers cautioned that further studies are needed to understand the exact mechanisms and to determine optimal dosages, as the current data relied on owner reports without specific details on product formulations. They advised owners considering CBD to choose reputable brands and be mindful of potential side effects like gastrointestinal issues. Ultimately, the study serves as a promising starting point for understanding how CBD can support the health and behavior of aging companion animals.
