Kansas Launches Statewide Crackdown on Illegal THC Vapes
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), in coordination with local law enforcement, has launched a major statewide enforcement operation targeting vape shops and CBD dispensaries selling illegal marijuana and high-concentration THC products. On Wednesday, October 1st, Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach and KBI Director Tony Mattivi announced that agents were executing numerous search warrants to seize marijuana vegetation, THC vape cartridges, and other items with suspected illegal THC levels.
KBI Director Mattivi stated that the widespread accessibility of these products has led some Kansans to mistakenly believe they are safe. “These illegal substances are in our homes, in our schools, and in the hands of our children,” he said. “Anyone who sells illicit products poses a direct and unacceptable threat to the health and safety of our most vulnerable.” Attorney General Kobach described the sales as “brazen illegal activities,” noting that some shops were selling pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes and that teens could often buy these products with less resistance than they would face when attempting to purchase legal tobacco.
The operation, which is ongoing, has already targeted at least ten businesses in cities including Wichita, Pratt, Salina, Concordia, McPherson, and Topeka. Once investigations are complete, findings will be sent to local prosecutors for charging decisions, which could include unlawful distribution of controlled substances. The crackdown has created confusion and concern among some business owners. One liquor store owner pulled THC-infused drinks from his shelves to ensure compliance, despite believing they were legal under the 0.3% THC limit and noting a generational shift of customers preferring them over alcohol. He, along with local distributors, called for more clarity on the state’s laws regarding hemp-derived THC products.
