Domestic Trade and Costs of Living Ministry to Collaborate with Sirim for Certification

The Domestic Trade and Costs of Living Ministry has reminded all electronic cigarette or vape device retailers to ensure their products have the Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) certification mark. Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali stated that the ministry will collaborate with Sirim to ensure electronic cigarette devices produced receive the MS Sirim certification mark, which meets the Sirim QAS International Sdn Bhd standards.

Armizan emphasized that the ministry’s jurisdiction relates to the Trade Description Act 2011, with a specific order issued in 2022 regarding the provision and marking of electronic cigarette devices. The ministry will enforce this order in cooperation with Sirim QAS International Sdn Bhd.

Concerns Over Vapes Resembling Marker Pens or Glue

The announcement comes after reports and concerns about the sale of electronic cigarettes resembling marker pens or UHU multi-purpose glue, which could confuse guardians or teachers. Effective August 3, 2022, manufacturers and importers of electronic cigarette devices must apply for the MS Sirim certification mark from Sirim QAS International Sdn. Bhd. The mark must be placed on the device, its spare parts, or on the case, and it must be easily visible to the user, indicating that the device has complied with the standard and is safe to use.

Reminder to Traders Not to Hike Prices of Sugary Products

In a separate statement, Armizan reminded traders not to increase the price of products made from refined white sugar, following the government’s announcement to increase the excise duty rate for sugary drinks in phases by 40 sen per litre from January 1 next year. The minister urged traders not to take the opportunity to raise the price of goods unrelated to the policy, stating that people can live without consuming excessive amounts of sugar.
