Colombia: Medellín Bans Vapes in Schools & Universities
The Mayor’s Office of Medellín, Colombia, has enacted strict new regulations banning the sale, distribution, and consumption of electronic cigarettes and vapes in all educational institutions and their surrounding areas. Issued through the Health Secretariat as Resolution 202550083698 on October 15, 2025, the measure aims to create environments 100% free of tobacco smoke and aerosols across public and private preschools, schools, and universities.
This decisive action responds to alarming data showing a surge in vaping among the city’s youth. Studies indicate that 40% of school students and 37.9% of university students have used such devices. The resolution mandates several key provisions for institutions:
- Total Prohibition: Consumption, sale, promotion, and sponsorship of tobacco and nicotine products are banned within educational environments.
- Signage: Visible signs must indicate the smoke and aerosol-free status of the area.
- Policy Updates: Student handbooks and coexistence manuals must be updated to reflect these new rules and control mechanisms.
- Education: Implementation of educational actions to prevent consumption.
The administration’s goal is to reduce health risks for vulnerable minors and prevent the normalization of vaping. Already, 113 institutions have updated their handbooks, with a target for full district-wide adoption within a year. The ‘Medellín Wants You Healthy’ program has also conducted over 2,400 educational activities, engaging more than 56,000 people in prevention efforts.
