Malaysia Melaka Considers E-Cigarette & Vape Sales Ban
The state government of Melaka, Malaysia, will soon discuss a proposal to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes (vapes) at the state executive council level. State Health, Human Resources, and Unity Committee Chairman, Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem, announced that the matter will be tabled for a detailed deliberation and decision.
This move underscores Melaka’s commitment to public health, prompted by an increasing number of lung-related disease cases linked to vape use recently recorded by the state Health Department. “We are seeing more and more health cases involving vapes. So there is a need for us to bring this issue to the executive council meeting,” Ngwe stated after a public health event on Saturday (May 24).
Datuk Rais Yasin, the state’s senior committee chairman for housing and local government, affirmed that his committee and local authorities would implement any decision made by the executive council. He noted a high number of applications for vape sale permits and existing licensed sales in Melaka but expressed greater concern about traders operating under general electronic device sales licenses. Rais believes a ban would simplify enforcement. He also suggested that federal government assistance in standardizing regulations or implementing a nationwide ban would be beneficial, while emphasizing the state aims for a “win-win situation” that considers entrepreneurs but prioritizes public safety and health.
