Oxford Medic Backs UK Plain Packaging Proposals

Dr. Rachel Hoyles, a consultant at Welbeck Oxford, has joined calls for the UK government to introduce plain packaging on vapes to protect children from predatory marketing. This development comes as the Department of Health and Social Care consults on measures to restrict vape designs, retail displays, and packaging under the upcoming Tobacco and Vapes Act.

Dr. Hoyles criticized vape companies for mimicking the flavors and designs of sweets to appeal to children. She argued that vapes are marketed as lifestyle accessories on social media, leading to the normalization of nicotine use among minors.

Public health data highlights the scale of the issue. According to the charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), youth vaping in Great Britain has reached the following levels:

While acknowledging that vapes can assist adults with smoking cessation, Dr. Hoyles warned that the health risks for youth are underestimated. She noted that the effects of early nicotine use on teenage brain development and mental health are still not fully understood, and urged people to consider traditional nicotine replacement therapies like patches, gums, and inhalers instead.

Later this year, Dr. Hoyles will lead a team of respiratory experts at Welbeck’s new £30 million medical practice in Jordan Hill. The facility will offer rapid lung health checks and breathing tests to diagnose conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and assess lung damage.
