UAE Schools Launch Anti-Vaping Campaign with Detection Sensors

Vaping News
UAE schools anti-vaping campaign

The UAE’s largest school network, GEMS Education Group, has launched a comprehensive anti-vaping campaign. The initiative, set to take effect in August 2025, includes stringent measures such as random bag inspections, the installation of advanced vaping detection sensors, and the incorporation of anti-vaping education into the curriculum.

Lisa Crausby, MBE, Chief Education Officer at GEMS Education Group, emphasized the severity of the vaping epidemic, stating, “Vaping is one of the most serious health threats facing young people today. We cannot stand idly by while this dangerous trend takes over our schools.” Students found in possession of vaping devices will face disciplinary action and will be required to attend educational sessions with psychological counselors to support them in quitting the habit.

The campaign’s centerpiece is the installation of state-of-the-art vaping detection sensors throughout school campuses, including the GEMS Research and Innovation School, set to open in August 2025. These highly sensitive and tamper-resistant sensors can distinguish between vaping and other airborne particles, ensuring accurate detection and swift response. The sensors also feature an audio function that can detect certain words, such as “help,” alerting staff to potential concerns.

In addition to sensor monitoring, GEMS Education Group will conduct random bag checks and increase staff vigilance in targeted areas. The schools will also collaborate with health specialists to support students struggling with nicotine addiction.

Crausby highlighted the initiative’s holistic approach, stating, “This initiative goes beyond merely banning vaping; it equips our students with the knowledge and resilience to make better choices for their health. We are committed to working with parents, our teachers, and the community as a whole to ensure our youth grow up in a clean environment that prioritizes their safety.”

The campaign seeks to set a new standard for student protection and aims to create a safe, healthy, and positive learning environment free from harmful substances. By taking a proactive stance against vaping, GEMS Education Group hopes to inspire other educational institutions to follow suit and prioritize the well-being of their students.
