US Nicotine Pouch Use Triples Among Adult Tobacco Users
Nicotine pouch consumption among US adult tobacco users more than tripled between 2021 and 2024, according to a cross-sectional study. The rapid shift, concentrated among younger adults, men, and established smokeless tobacco users, highlights evolving patterns of nicotine consumption across the country.
Researchers evaluated data from 1,583 adult tobacco users in 2021 alongside 1,355 comparable participants in 2024. Across this period, the proportion of respondents who had ever tried a nicotine pouch nearly doubled, while regular adoption escalated across nearly all surveyed demographics.
| Pouch Usage Metric (Tobacco Users) | 2021 Baseline | 2024 Follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Ever Use (Lifetime Trial) | 16.4% | 31.1% |
| Current Use (Regular Consumption) | 3.0% | 10.2% |
| Smokeless Tobacco Subgroup Current Use | 12.8% | 43.7% |
Young Men and Smokeless Tobacco Consumers Lead Market Growth
A wider 2024 survey of 3,200 US adults—regardless of their tobacco history—showed that 10.6% had tried nicotine pouches, with 2.7% reporting current use. Age and gender disparities were evident throughout the dataset:
- Age Distribution: Current use was highest among adults aged 31–45 (5.3%), followed by ages 21–30 (4.0%), and dropped to 0.8% for adults over 60.
- Gender Differences: Men reported higher current consumption than women, at 4.3% versus 1.3%.
The strongest association occurred among traditional smokeless tobacco users. Within this group, 75.6% reported ever using pouches, and 43.7% reported active use in 2024. Cigarette smokers and vape users also showed elevated trial rates.
Clinical Considerations for Dual Product Use
The findings emphasize the need for medical professionals to screen for pouch adoption during routine evaluations of nicotine dependence. Because the study relied on self-reported observational data, researchers noted that additional tracking is required to determine whether users are fully replacing combustible tobacco or engaging in concurrent dual use.
