Turkey Ranks 2nd in Smoking Globally as Deaths Top 100K
Turkish Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu announced that Turkey ranks second globally in tobacco consumption, with 33 percent of the population using tobacco products. Speaking at a hospital opening ceremony in Zonguldak, Memişoğlu revealed that tobacco-related illnesses claim over 100,000 lives nationwide each year, making smoking one of the country’s most urgent public health threats.
Early Initiation and the Push for Digital Age Checks
Ministry data indicates that more than half of all smokers in Turkey pick up the habit before turning 18. Retail enforcement remains a critical vulnerability: 73.3 percent of tobacco users between the ages of 13 and 15 successfully buy cigarettes without ever having their age verified by vendors.
To eliminate this commercial loophole, Memişoğlu highlighted the need for an electronic age verification system at retail points of sale. Public support for regulatory intervention remains strong, with a survey by the Green Crescent (Yeşilay) showing that 90 percent of citizens favor mandatory digital age verification for all tobacco purchases.
Health Warnings Issued on Vapes and Disposable Puffs
Memişoğlu also addressed the growing popularity of electronic cigarettes and disposable “puff” devices, which manufacturers package and market to appeal to younger consumers. He firmly rejected claims that vaping represents a harmless option for youth.
“No tobacco product should be considered a harmless habit,” Memişoğlu stated, warning that electronic nicotine delivery systems carry severe health hazards and accelerate youth addiction.
Cessation Support and Market Figures
Commercial data reflects the entrenched nature of the habit, with 150.5 billion bandrolled cigarettes sold across Turkey in 2024 alone. Despite these figures, approximately 80 percent of Turkish tobacco users report wanting to break their addiction.
To support this demand, Turkey operates 1,910 dedicated Smoking Cessation Clinics alongside remote consultations via the central physician appointment system (MHRS). The state provides cessation medications free of charge—including to uninsured citizens—backed by 24/7 counseling through the ALO 171 helpline. Memişoğlu stressed that reversing these numbers requires sustained vigilance from educators, families, and law enforcement alike.
