ELFA Vape Aerosols Have Far Fewer Toxins Than Cigarettes: Study
A peer-reviewed study published in the scientific journal iScience has confirmed that aerosols from the ELFA pod system contain toxicant levels that are either undetectable or lower than those found in combustible cigarette smoke. Conducted under standardized laboratory conditions, the research analyzed 17 smoke-related analytes across four ELFA e-liquid flavors: Super Tobacco, Spearmint, Strawberry Ice, and Watermelon.
The laboratory tests showed that 10 of the 17 targeted harmful compounds were completely absent or fell below quantifiable limits in all tested pods. These undetected substances include carbon monoxide (CO), tobacco-specific nitrosamines (NNK and NNN), acrolein, benzo[a]pyrene, 1,3-butadiene, and benzene.
Researchers also evaluated heavy metal emissions in the vape aerosols, measuring concentrations in micrograms per 100 puffs. Cadmium and arsenic were not detected in any of the ELFA pods. While trace amounts of lead, chromium, nickel, aluminum, iron, and tin were occasionally present, their estimated exposure levels remained well below the safety limits established by the US Pharmacopeia and the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

The study noted reductions in carbonyls, which are common thermal byproducts. Formaldehyde emissions were 99.6% to 99.9% lower than in cigarette smoke, while acetaldehyde emissions dropped by 99.7% to 99.9%, depending on the flavor tested. This reduction is partially attributed to ELFA’s iron-chromium-aluminum alloy mesh heating coil, which vaporizes e-liquid more efficiently than traditional cotton or ceramic coils.
