Expert Reveals Alternative Tobacco Products Have Lower Toxin Levels Than Cigarettes

A public health specialist, Dr. Tri Budi Bhaskara, has found that the use of alternative tobacco products such as electronic cigarettes (vapes) and vaping products has effectively reduced the number of smokers in several countries, including Sweden and Japan. This decrease in smokers correlates with a reduction in the incidence of smoking-related diseases.

“These alternative tobacco products are excellent. Scientific studies show that alternative tobacco products are 95% safer than tobacco,” stated Dr. Tree on Thursday (8/8/2024).

He explained that the primary purpose of using alternative tobacco products is to help elderly smokers quit smoking. Although alternative tobacco contains nicotine, it does not produce TAR like cigarettes do. TAR is a hard chemical compound produced from the tobacco burning process and is carcinogenic or cancer-causing.

“In addition to tobacco, nicotine is also found in tomatoes, potatoes, and nuts. Nicotine is also a compound like caffeine and other compounds found in chocolate. So for non-smokers, they will feel more relaxed and calm after consuming caffeine or chocolate,” explained Dr. Tri.

Ario Bimmo, Chairman of the Indonesia Coalition Free of TAR (KABAR), specifically explained that based on scientific evidence, there is a significant opportunity to create positive change to improve the quality of life for elderly smokers.

“Through a harm reduction approach to smoking, we can reduce the health risks of smoking while still respecting the choices and freedom of elderly smokers, whether they want to quit smoking altogether or switch to lower-risk products,” Ario explained.
