Aiken County, SC Advances Vape Shop Location Restrictions
The Aiken County Council has given its initial approval to a new ordinance that would significantly restrict the locations of new smoke and vape shops in the county. In a unanimous 9-0 vote on October 21st, the council approved the first of three required readings for the measure, which aims to amend the county’s Land Management Regulations.
If the ordinance receives final approval, new smoke or vape shops would be prohibited from opening within 2,000 feet of a wide range of sensitive locations. These include public or private K-12 schools, post-secondary education institutions, child daycare facilities, youth centers, public parks, community centers, and churches or other religious institutions. The ordinance would also prevent a new smoke or vape shop from being established within 2,000 feet of an existing one, aiming to prevent clustering.
County Council Chairman Gary Bunker clarified that the changes would only apply to properties in the unincorporated parts of Aiken County, not within municipalities like the City of Aiken. He also confirmed that any existing shops would be “grandfathered in,” meaning the ordinance cannot make a currently legal business illegal. The recommendations for these amendments were developed by the Aiken County Planning Commission, which voted 5-0 to send them to the County Council after research and subcommittee discussions.
The ordinance will require two more favorable readings before it can take effect. The council’s unanimous initial support suggests strong backing for the proposed restrictions.
