South Carolina: Aiken County Recommends Vape Shop Location Restrictions
The Aiken County Planning Commission in South Carolina has unanimously recommended amendments to the county’s Code of Ordinances that would significantly restrict where smoke and vape shops can be located. The proposal, which now heads to the County Council for final consideration, is a direct response to concerns raised by local high school principals about the “rampant use” of vaping products by students.
The proposed changes would prohibit new smoke or vape shops from being established within 2,000 feet of a wide range of sensitive locations. These include public or private K-12 schools, post-secondary institutions, child daycare facilities, youth centers, recreational facilities, public parks, community centers, and churches. Additionally, a new smoke or vape shop could not be located within 2,000 feet of an existing one, aiming to prevent clustering of these businesses.
The recommendation was developed after South Aiken High School Principal Sam Fuller, along with other county principals, formally requested that County Council place restrictions on vape shop proximity to schools. In a letter, the principals also asked the council to advocate for stronger legal and financial penalties for selling vape products to underage individuals. The Planning Commission’s vote signals a significant step towards implementing these stricter zoning and land-use controls for vape retailers in Aiken County.
