Bulgarian Parliament’s Economic Policy Committee Approves Full Ban on Vaping Devices
The Bulgarian National Assembly’s Economic Policy Committee unanimously approved amendments to the Tobacco, Tobacco Products, and Related Products Act that would introduce a complete ban on the sale, distribution, and advertising of single-use and reusable electronic cigarettes, also known as vapes, and similar devices, regardless of whether they contain nicotine. The proposed changes were introduced by Dr. Kostadin Angelov, chair of the parliament’s Health Committee, on February 7, 2025.
During the committee meeting, only Daniel Lorer from the PP-DB party and Yordan Tsonev from the DPS – NEW BEGINNING party provided comments on the proposed legislation. In total, three bills seeking to ban vapes and energy drinks for individuals under 18 have been submitted by various political factions, including GERB, DB, and “Vazrazhdane.”
Angelov urged his fellow lawmakers to support the amendments, emphasizing that their approval would send a clear signal that the Bulgarian government is committed to addressing this pressing public health issue.
With the Economic Policy Committee’s endorsement, the proposed changes to the Tobacco, Tobacco Products, and Related Products Act will now move forward for further consideration by the full National Assembly. If passed, the new restrictions would represent a significant step in Bulgaria’s efforts to protect the health and well-being of its citizens, particularly its youth, from the dangers associated with vaping and excessive energy drink consumption.
