Canada Youth Vaping Rates Plummet 60% Ahead of World Vape Day

Ahead of World Vape Day on May 30, 2026, newly released federal data has challenged the narrative of a youth vaping “crisis” in Canada. According to the Third Legislative Review of the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act published on May 20, 2026, youth vaping rates have plummeted, sparking renewed calls to protect adult access to flavored harm-reduction alternatives.

The Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth reports that past-30-day vaping among adolescents aged 12 to 17 fell from a peak of 13.2% in 2019 to just 5.8% in 2024. Sam Tam, President of the CVA, emphasized that public policy must be guided by this current evidence rather than “moral panic” or outdated statistics.

Despite this progress, several prominent health organizations continue to lobby for a federal ban on flavored vaping products. Advocates warn that such prohibitionist measures threaten Canada’s goal of reducing national smoking rates to under 5% by 2035. Flavors play a critical role in helping the country’s 1.9 million adult vapers stay away from combustible tobacco, which claims over 8 million lives globally each year.

Furthermore, restricting legal access risks triggering severe unintended consequences, including:
