1/6 Europeans Smoke or Vape Daily as Nicotine Rates Drop to 16.5%

Daily consumption of tobacco and alternative nicotine products across the European Union dropped to 16.5% among individuals aged 16 and older in 2025, down from 17.5% in 2022. The latest Eurostat survey shows that while daily nicotine use remains widespread, overall consumption is steadily decreasing across the continent.

The survey covers traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, heated tobacco devices, and nicotine pouches. In contrast to daily users, 77.5% of the European population reported not using any nicotine products during the twelve months preceding the survey.

Demographic Breakdown: Gender and Age Differences

The data reveals stark disparities across gender and age groups throughout the bloc. Men remain far more likely to consume nicotine on a daily basis than women, with daily usage rates standing at 20.8% and 12.6% respectively.

Middle-aged adults between 35 and 49 years old represent the highest proportion of daily consumers at 21.3%. Conversely, youth consumption in the 16-to-24 age category was the lowest among all measured brackets at 12.1%.

National Variations Across the European Union

Nicotine habits vary widely depending on the country. Bulgaria, Sweden, and Croatia recorded the highest concentrations of daily smokers and alternative nicotine consumers. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Belgium registered the lowest daily consumption rates in the EU.

Daily use decreased in 17 out of the 27 EU member states compared to 2022 levels. Although the pace of reduction remains gradual, the findings confirm a continent-wide trend toward declining daily nicotine consumption.
