Daily Vaping Doubles Among French High Schoolers as Smoking Drops
The French Observatory for Drugs and Addictive Tendencies (OFDT) reports that daily vaping among French high school students has more than doubled since 2018. This sharp increase coincides with a historic collapse in traditional youth smoking and is heavily linked to youth-targeted marketing.
| Daily Habit | 2018 Rate | 2024 Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Vaping | 2.8% | 6.8% |
| Traditional Smoking | 15.5% | 2.9% |
| Exclusive Vaping | 0.8% | 4.0% |
Experimentation has also grown, with 46% of students having tried e-cigarettes by 2024. Notably, girls (48.7%) are experimenting more than boys (43.2%), a trend the OFDT attributes to aggressive marketing strategies.
Disposable “puffs” fueled this expansion, used by 85.5% of students who experimented with vaping. To combat this youth appeal, France officially banned the sale of disposable vapes in February 2025.
