Spain Galicia to Ban All Vape Sales and Use for Minors: €3k Fines
The Spanish region of Galicia has implemented a strict ban on the sale and consumption of energy drinks and e-cigarettes for minors. Starting March 7th, violators face fines of up to €3,000 as the government equates these products to alcohol and tobacco to protect youth health.
The Spanish autonomous community of Galicia is taking a hardline stance on youth health. Effective March 7th, a new regional law officially prohibits the sale, possession, and consumption of both energy drinks and electronic cigarettes for anyone under the age of 18. This legislative move, spearheaded by the Xunta de Galicia, aims to curb the rising use of stimulants and nicotine among adolescents.
Regional President Alfonso Rueda was clear about the intent behind the new rules. “Energy drinks will be equated to alcohol, and electronic cigarettes to tobacco,” he declared. Under the new legal definition, any beverage containing 32 milligrams or more of caffeine per 100 milliliters is classified as an energy drink and restricted accordingly.
The crackdown is driven by concerning statistics. Data from the ESTUDES survey reveals that nearly half of Spanish teenagers consume energy drinks, while over 40% have experimented with vaping devices. To combat this, the law mandates that retailers must now display these products in separate, designated areas and rigorously verify the age of every purchaser. Furthermore, the distribution of vapes and high-caffeine drinks is now completely banned in schools, healthcare facilities, and other spaces frequented by minors.
The financial penalties for non-compliance are severe. Selling these products to a minor is classified as a “serious infraction,” carrying fines of up to €3,000 (approximately R$ 18,300). Minors caught consuming energy drinks or vaping in public aren’t exempt either; they face personal fines ranging from €200 to €600. Retailers will be held directly responsible for any irregular sales, signaling a zero-tolerance approach from local authorities.
