Sen. Ashley Moody Urges FDA Nominee to Halt Illicit Chinese Vape Imports

U.S. Senator Ashley Moody has called on Food and Drug Administration nominee Dr. Hedi Overton to execute a federal crackdown on unauthorized Chinese-manufactured vapes entering the United States. Speaking during a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee confirmation hearing, Moody stressed that these illicit products threaten American youth.

Targeting Youth Appeal and Foreign Supply Chains

Moody emphasized that roughly 85% of the illicit nicotine vapor market in the United States originates from China. She highlighted that many unauthorized products incorporate features like built-in video games to entice underage consumers.

“These illicit vapes are a widespread danger specifically targeting America’s youth,” Moody said. “I am calling on the FDA and Administration to take these illicit devices seriously because the health of our kids depends on it.”

Past Enforcement and Federal Commitments

During her tenure as Florida’s Attorney General, Moody led litigation against Juul and multiple local vape distributors, while enacting state laws to prohibit kid-appealing nicotine items. She has also urged President Donald Trump to address the illegal e-cigarette trade directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

When questioned on her regulatory strategy, Dr. Overton confirmed that stopping illegal imports will be a core focus.

“If I’m confirmed in this role, that would be a top priority,” Overton stated, pledging that the FDA will collaborate with federal law enforcement agencies to intercept illegal shipments at U.S. borders.
