Malaysia Perak State Reviewing Potential Vape Sales Ban
The Perak state government in Malaysia is currently deliberating a potential ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes (vapes), according to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. No final decision has been made, as several factors require careful consideration, including discussions with the Vape Traders Association, from whom Saarani has received a meeting request.
The matter was briefly discussed at a recent state executive council (exco) meeting, but a comprehensive study is needed before in-depth deliberations can occur. Saarani has tasked Health Executive Councilor A. Sivanesan with leading a review from a public health perspective, while also considering the potential impact on vape traders, similar to how cigarette regulations are handled. “Once all factors are considered, we hope to arrive at a clearer direction on whether to proceed with a ban,” Saarani stated, expressing hope for a swift presentation to the exco.
This review comes amidst growing concerns, highlighted by reports of 76 vape-related poisoning cases referred to the National Poison Centre between 2020 and 2024, with a sharp rise since 2022. A significant 81% of these cases involved vapes marketed as “magic mushroom vape,” predominantly affecting teenagers and young adults.
