Slovakia Proposes Ban on Flavored and Disposable Vapes by 2026
Slovakia’s Ministry of Health has announced plans to ban the sale of most flavored nicotine products and all disposable electronic cigarettes. The proposed prohibition targets tobacco products with distinct flavors considered attractive to youth, aiming to curb underage vaping.
Under the draft legislation, an exception would be made for e-cigarettes with menthol, mint, or tobacco flavors, as these are considered important for adults attempting to quit traditional smoking. The Ministry cited the experiences of countries like Denmark, Estonia, Slovenia, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, which have implemented similar national restrictions.
The ban on disposable e-cigarettes is driven not only by their popularity among young people but also due to the significant environmental burden associated with their production and consumption. The bill has been sent for interdepartmental discussion within the government. If approved by the cabinet, it will proceed to the National Council for consideration and then to the President for signature. The Ministry of Health anticipates the ban could take effect from January 1, 2026. This move follows similar actions in other EU countries, with Belgium having already banned disposable vape sales from January 1, 2025.
