Switzerland Solothurn Canton Bans Disposable Vapes

The Swiss canton of Solothurn votes to ban sales of single-use e-cigarettes due to youth addiction and environmental concerns; reusable vapes remain legal.

The Swiss canton of Solothurn has voted to ban the sale of disposable e-cigarettes (Einweg-Vapes), citing concerns over youth addiction and environmental damage. The cantonal council approved the sales prohibition, making Solothurn one of the first cantons in Switzerland to take such a step. Rechargeable, reusable vape systems will remain legal for sale.

Disposable vapes, popular for their wide variety of flavors like “Watermelon” and “Triple Mango,” have faced criticism for specifically targeting a young audience, leading to early nicotine dependence and potentially lowering the barrier to other nicotine products. Additionally, the lithium batteries in these single-use devices pose an environmental problem as they often end up in general waste or littered rather than being recycled.

During the debate, while members agreed on the dangers posed by disposable vapes, some center-right politicians argued a cantonal ban was the wrong approach, suggesting it would lead to bureaucracy and consumers simply buying in neighboring cantons. They advocated for a national solution. However, proponents, like EVP Cantonal Councillor André Wyss who initiated the motion, argued that a cantonal ban would increase pressure for a nationwide regulation. The ban was narrowly approved with 48 votes in favor to 44 against, with some support from the center-right camp. The cantonal government will now take the necessary steps to implement the ban. Other cantons like Valais, Jura, and Bern have reportedly passed or enacted similar prohibitions.
