Do you know how much money you smoke each month?
Chile’s Ministry of Health (Minsal) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) have launched an interactive smoking cost calculator. The initiative responds to survey data indicating that one in three Chilean teenagers has experimented with e-cigarettes, raising alarms over early nicotine addiction.
Survey Identifies Heavy Nicotine Use Among Chilean Students
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey, which evaluated 7,204 Chilean students between the ages of 13 and 15, revealed that 14.8% actively use e-cigarettes monthly. Traditional combustible tobacco usage remains high, with 23.3% reporting past experimentation—particularly among teenage girls—and 9.3% identifying as current active smokers.
Health Minister May Chomali warned of the long-term consequences associated with early nicotine uptake:
“We feel that we are in a very high-risk zone for our adolescents, in terms of them starting the use of cigarettes and electronic cigarettes too early, which will predict very high risks for physical and mental health in the future.”
Minister Chomali also criticized aggressive vape marketing, which has created a low perception of risk among young demographics. Dr. Carolina Herrera added that certain high-capacity vapes deliver nicotine doses equivalent to 15 packs of cigarettes, even as 68.3% of surveyed students expressed uncertainty about whether secondhand vapor and smoke are harmful.
Tracking Personal Tobacco Expenses Through Interactive Tools
To highlight the economic impact of smoking, Minsal integrated the “Cost of Smoking Calculator” into its public health platform, Elige no Fumar. The digital tool calculates the cumulative financial drain caused by nicotine products based on user input.
Users enter four data points to generate an expense projection:
- The average retail price per cigarette pack.
- The number of units contained in each pack.
- The average number of cigarettes consumed daily.
- The total duration of the individual’s smoking habit.
The application generates itemized reports detailing estimated expenditures across weekly, monthly, yearly, 5-year, 10-year, and lifetime intervals. Public health officials aim to use these tangible financial projections to motivate current smokers to quit while discouraging youth experimentation.
