Louisiana’s New THC and CBD Regulations Set to Disrupt Hemp Industry in 2025
Lower Potency Limits, Age Restrictions, and Sales Bans Expected to Impact Businesses and Consumers
Louisiana is set to implement new laws regulating THC and CBD products starting January 1, 2025. These changes are expected to have a significant impact on the state’s hemp industry, affecting businesses and consumers alike.
Key Changes in THC and CBD Regulations
The new regulations will bring about several notable changes:
- Lower potency limits: The maximum amount of THC and CBD that can be sold in stores will be reduced from 8mg to 5mg per serving.
- Increased age requirement: The minimum age to purchase THC and CBD products will be raised from 18 to 21 years old.
- Sales restrictions: Gas stations will no longer be allowed to sell THC and CBD products.
- Storage requirements: Consumable hemp products, excluding drinks, must be kept behind the sales counter.
- Permit deadline: Restaurants and bars that did not obtain a permit before June 2024 will be prohibited from selling hemp-derived THC products.
Supporters and Critics
Proponents of the new law argue that it will enhance consumer safety by requiring higher potency products to undergo testing and regulation, with sales limited to licensed dispensaries. However, some store owners, like Jordan Younes of 420 Smoke and Liquor shop, express concerns about the impact on their businesses.
Younes estimates that at least 40% of his inventory consists of products that will need to be disposed of under the new regulations. He will then have to source lower-strength products and explain the changes to consumers, which he believes may hurt his store’s credibility.
Potential Consequences
Younes predicts that his business and the state will lose revenue, even though he maintains that his store sells legitimate and safe products. He anticipates that consumers will likely seek out higher dosage products by purchasing them out of state or obtaining medical marijuana cards.
Dr. Randy J Mire, CEO of Capitol Wellness Solutions, acknowledges that some shops and gas stations have taken advantage of loopholes and harmed patients. He emphasizes that the new law stemmed from consumer complaints and does not impact his products, as Capitol Wellness Solutions operates in the Therapeutic Marijuana industry, not the hemp industry.
As Louisiana implements these new THC and CBD regulations, businesses in the hemp industry will need to adapt to the changing landscape. The full extent of the impact on consumers, businesses, and the state’s economy remains to be seen as the industry navigates these new challenges.
