Dutch Authorities Seize 220,000 Illegal Vapes & 23M Cigarettes
The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) and the FIOD have executed major raids across Zuid-Holland and Noord-Brabant, seizing hundreds of thousands of illegal vaping products and millions of illicit cigarettes. This aggressive two-week crackdown directly targets the black market distribution of banned sweet-flavored vapes and untaxed tobacco.
The NVWA’s operations focused on illegal vapes and nicotine pouches, both of which are strictly prohibited in the Netherlands. The confiscated goods will be destroyed at the owners’ expense.
The recent seizures unfolded in two primary locations:
- Zuid-Holland:Â Following a request from the Hoeksche Waard municipality, inspectors discovered three shipping containers on May 6 holding 151,400 sweet-flavored vapes and 49,400 boxes of nicotine pouches.
- Noord-Brabant:Â Acting on intelligence, authorities raided a storage unit on May 12, seizing an additional 66,720 illegal vapes and 2,640 boxes of nicotine pouches.
Simultaneously, the FIOD intercepted three containers packed with 23 million illegal cigarettes between April 27 and May 5. Eight suspects were arrested in connection with this operation. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) is currently investigating the criminal networks behind the smuggling, which would have cost the state nearly €9 million in lost revenue.
