Tourists Face Fines for Nicotine Pouches in France & More

Nicotine Pouches Ban Travel Warning

Travelers who use oral nicotine pouches are being urged to exercise extreme caution when visiting popular European holiday destinations, as several countries have implemented complete bans on the products, including for personal consumption. Being caught with these common items could result in significant fines, confiscation, or even criminal penalties.

Nicotine pouch maker KLAR has sounded the alarm, highlighting that France, Germany, and the Netherlands have all introduced total prohibitions on nicotine pouches. With the number of users in the UK alone topping 590,000 and growing, many travelers may be unaware that a product legally purchased at home could land them in trouble abroad. The firm warns that local legislation can change quickly, making it crucial for holiday-makers to check official government travel advice and the websites of relevant embassies before departure to understand the specific rules of their destination country.

For those traveling to countries where personal use is permitted, Tomas Hammargren, chief risk reduction officer at KLAR, shared some guidance to avoid potential issues:

  • Keep Original Packaging: Always keep nicotine pouches in their original, sealed packaging. This helps border officials quickly identify the product and can speed up inspection procedures.
  • Check Airline Policies: While nicotine pouches generally do not contain liquids or batteries – making them secure for both carry-on and checked luggage without the risk of spills or battery-related fire hazards – it’s important to check your airline’s specific policy on their use. Nicotine pouches are often allowed to be used discreetly onboard flights where vaping is strictly prohibited, but you should always confirm with the cabin crew.
  • Pack Sufficient Supplies: Many countries will have restricted or no availability of specific nicotine alternatives. If you rely on these products, it is wise to pack enough supplies for your entire trip, assuming you have confirmed they are legal to possess in your destination.

This warning serves as a broader reminder for all international travelers to stay informed about local laws. Similar to checking passport validity, as recommended by travel experts at the Post Office, researching the regulations for common items like nicotine products is a simple but essential step in planning ahead. A quick check before you travel can prevent your holiday from being ruined by unexpected fines or legal complications.
