Baton Rouge, LA Imposes 500-Foot Buffer Zone for Vape Shop from Schools

Louisiana vape ban

The Baton Rouge, Louisiana Metro Council has unanimously passed a new ordinance banning vape and tobacco shops from operating within 500 feet of schools, churches, libraries, daycare centers, public parks, and other vape retailers. The move aims to reduce youth exposure to e-tobacco products.

The rule also requires stores to post clear signage stating that no one under 18 is allowed inside.

Legal Age for Vaping

While Louisiana state law already requires permits and licenses to sell vape products, Baton Rouge had no local restrictions until now. Businesses currently operating within the restricted zones will be grandfathered in, though it remains unclear if owners can sell their shops to other vape or tobacco retailers.

Councilmembers Rowdy Gaudet, Denise Amoroso, Carolyn Coleman, and Twahna Harris sponsored the measure, promising to refine its language. Coleman stressed the need to focus on the intent—keeping vape products out of sight near schools—rather than getting stuck on technical details.

The ordinance reflects a growing trend of Louisiana municipalities tightening vape regulations to curb underage use.
