Beckley, WV Passes New Vape Shop Location Restrictions

,
Beckley WV Vape Shop Ordinance

The City of Beckley, West Virginia, has enacted a new ordinance, effective immediately, that imposes strict location restrictions on vape and smoke shops. Passed by the City Council after a second reading, the law aims to protect youth and make communities safer and healthier.

The ordinance primarily applies to new businesses, preventing them from opening in residential districts. Furthermore, new vape shops will be required to be located at least 1,500 feet away from sensitive areas such as schools, daycare centers, churches, and parks. The law also mandates a 1,500-foot buffer between vape shops themselves.

The move was supported by community groups like Raleigh County United for Prevention, which worked with city leadership to provide education on how such businesses can target younger community members. Mat Bishop, COO of the YMCA of Southern West Virginia, praised the ordinance as a “win any time we can help to protect the kids.”

Vape shops that were operational at the time the ordinance was passed are grandfathered in. However, if they cease operations for 30 days or make any changes to their current operation, they will be required to reapply for a permit under the new, stricter regulations.
