Belgian Tobacconists Must Hide Cigarettes Starting April 1st

Belgium cigarette display ban

As part of Belgium’s ongoing efforts to curb tobacco consumption, tobacconists throughout the country will be required to hide cigarettes from public view starting Tuesday, April 1st, 2025. This measure, originally slated for implementation on January 1st, was approved nearly two years ago by the Council of Ministers as part of a comprehensive anti-smoking plan.

Under the new rule, retailers will be prohibited from visibly displaying cigarettes, vapes, or any similar products in their stores. Instead, these items must be stored in a separate room, drawer, or cabinet, keeping them out of sight while still being legally available for purchase.

Belgium has long been at the forefront of the fight against smoking and its detrimental effects on public health. The country was the first in Europe to ban the marketing of disposable electronic cigarettes (pod systems) within its borders, a move later followed by France and the United Kingdom. Additionally, Belgian authorities have increased tobacco taxes and expanded smoking prohibitions to include areas frequently visited by young people.

The concealment of cigarettes in retail outlets marks another significant step in Belgium’s multi-faceted approach to reducing smoking rates and protecting public health, particularly among younger generations.
