Colombia Bill Advances to Impose 30% Tax on Vape Products
The Colombian House of Representatives has approved in a second debate a bill that seeks to impose a 30% tax on the consumption of electronic cigarettes and vapes in the country. The proposed “health tax,” as it is referred to in the legislation, aims to decrease the use of these electronic smoking devices in Colombia.
Representative Carolina Giraldo, from the Green Alliance party, highlighted the potential benefits of the bill, stating, “For the health system, we would be saving 6.5 billion pesos annually that are spent on problems related to smoking. Additionally, we would be preventing some 450,000 deaths that are occurring in Colombia due to the effects of smoking.“
Having passed the second debate in the House of Representatives, the bill now moves to a third debate in the Senate of the Republic. If approved, the legislation would impose significant restrictions on electronic cigarettes and vapes in Colombia, marking a step towards protecting public health and discouraging the use of these products.
Proponents of the bill argue that it could have a substantial impact on both public health and government revenue. By reducing the consumption of electronic cigarettes and vapes, the legislation aims to prevent hundreds of thousands of smoking-related deaths in Colombia. Additionally, the proposed 30% tax could generate significant funds for public health initiatives and departmental budgets.
However, the bill is likely to face opposition from the tobacco and vaping industry, who may argue that it unfairly targets their products and could lead to job losses in the sector. Policymakers will need to carefully consider the potential benefits and drawbacks of the proposed tax as they deliberate its merits in the coming debates.
