Scotland has witnessed a staggering 19.4% increase in the number of illicit vapes seized between January and October 2024 compared to the entire year of 2023, according to the latest council data obtained by vape retailer Totally Wicked through hundreds of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.

Highland Council reported the most dramatic rise, with the number of confiscated vapes skyrocketing by 1,095.8%, from 291 in 2023 to 3,480 in 2024. West Lothian Council also experienced a significant 410.2% increase, with authorities seizing 500 illegal vapes in 2024, up from 98 the previous year.

Glasgow City Council remains the area most affected by the illicit vape trade, with the number of seized vapes more than doubling (105.63% increase) to reach 5,735 this year. However, some areas, such as West Dunbartonshire and Fife, saw declines of 89.20% and 80.15%, respectively.

Across the UK, enforcement efforts have led to the seizure of 1.5 million vapes so far in 2024, compared to 2.5 million in the entire year of 2023. The East of England experienced the most significant increase in illegal vape seizures, with 336,507 more vapes confiscated by authorities than the previous year. Essex County Council recorded the highest volume of illegal vape seizures in the country, largely due to 329,000 non-compliant units being refused entry at seaports and subsequently returned to their country of origin. The North East and South West of England also saw a rise in the number of illegal vape seizures.

Totally Wicked’s CEO and Chairman of the Independent British Vape Trade Association (IBVTA) emphasized the importance of the crackdown on illegal and unsafe vaping products, stating that it helps protect consumers and ensures that only compliant products are available on the market. He urged retailers to source vapes from trusted, regulated distributors to guarantee the sale of safe products.
