Shipping E-Cigarettes Into Illinois Now Banned

Illinois bans e-cigarette shipping

Illinois has taken a significant step towards safeguarding youth from the dangers of vaping by implementing a new law that prohibits the shipping of e-cigarettes into the state. State Senator Meg Loughran Cappel championed the legislation, which aims to curb the ease with which minors can access vaping products online.

“The internet has made it far too easy for kids to get their hands on vapes,” Senator Loughran Cappel (D-Shorewood) stated. “Manufacturers are designing e-cigarettes to resemble everyday school supplies, making it challenging for teachers to identify them. After hearing from local elected officials who were witnessing a surge in vape usage in schools, it became evident that we needed to take action to protect our children from the dangers of smoking.”

Senate Bill 3098 prohibits the shipping of electronic cigarettes purchased by mail, online, or through other remote sale methods to anyone in Illinois, with the exception of distributors and retailers. This legislation comes in response to the increasing prevalence of e-cigarettes that are designed to look like common objects, such as highlighters, making them difficult to detect in a school setting.

Michelle Stiff, Joliet Township High School District 204 board president, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “When vape pens can be engineered to resemble school supplies, concealing their true identity, the device can be hidden in plain sight, making it difficult for parents or adults to recognize it as an e-cigarette. We are witnessing an alarming increase in e-cigarette use among high school students, with far too many student discipline cases related to vaping. This highlights the need for a comprehensive and collaborative approach to reduce the accessibility of vape products and their marketing to minors.”

Senate Bill 3098, signed into law on Friday, will take effect on January 1, 2025, marking a significant step forward in protecting Illinois youth from the dangers of vaping.
