Jersey Bans Disposable Vapes Starting in 2025 to Address Environmental Concerns
States Assembly Unanimously Approves Ban, Shops Allowed to Sell Off Remaining Stock
The States Assembly of Jersey has unanimously approved a ban on disposable vapes, set to take effect in 2025. The decision, which received 45 votes in favor and zero votes against, aims to address the growing environmental impact of single-use vaping devices.
Constable Andy Jehan, who brought the plans to the States Assembly, expressed concern over the increasing popularity of disposable vapes, particularly among young people. He emphasized the stark contrast between the use of materials such as plastics, metals, and lithium batteries in these devices and the island’s sustainability commitments to reduce waste, maximize resources, and reorient behavior towards a circular economy.
Under the new regulations, shops will be permitted to sell off any remaining stock of disposable vapes before the ban comes into force. This move aligns with similar measures adopted by the United Kingdom and Guernsey, where the sale of disposable vapes will become a criminal offense.
