Kenya Mandates New Graphic Warnings on Tobacco Packaging

Kenya Tobacco Packaging

Kenya’s Ministry of Health is cracking down on tobacco packaging, mandating that all products display prominent graphic health warnings (GHWs), including images and pictograms, as stipulated in Section 21 of the Tobacco Control Act. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale issued a stern warning to tobacco manufacturers, importers, and distributors, emphasizing full compliance with these new regulations.

The Ministry published the third set of GHWs last week and has granted the tobacco industry a nine-month compliance period from the date of gazettement to align their packaging. CS Duale stated on social media platform X, “These warnings are not optional. They are a legal requirement designed to educate the public and protect our youth and vulnerable populations from the dangers of tobacco.” He added that non-compliance will attract the full force of the law.

This directive underscores the government’s urgency in tackling tobacco-related diseases. The updated GHW policy aims to deter smoking, combat the normalization of tobacco, shield non-smokers from secondhand exposure, and reduce the burden on Kenya’s health system. The Ministry has called on all stakeholders to support the full rollout and enforcement of these updated regulations as Kenya joins global efforts in evidence-based tobacco control.
