Just one week after the Maldives implemented a ban on using vapes, the Police have already fined nine individuals for violating the new law. According to a Police media official, these fines, issued by Sunday, amount to a total of MVR 50,000 (approximately USD 3,240).

One of the nine offenders received an additional fine of MVR 10,000 (approximately USD 650) for smoking an e-cigarette while driving a motorcycle. This incident highlights the importance of adhering to both the vaping ban and traffic safety regulations.

The Tobacco Control Act, which came into effect on December 15, outlines the following fines for vaping-related offenses:

  • Using vapes: MVR 5,000 (approximately USD 325)
  • Distributing vapes: MVR 10,000 (approximately USD 650)
  • Selling vapes: MVR 20,000 (approximately USD 1,300) plus an additional MVR 10,000 (approximately USD 650) for each unit sold
  • Selling vapes to individuals under the minimum age of 21 for tobacco sale: MVR 50,000 (approximately USD 3,240)

The Police have streamlined the process of paying fines by sending fine notifications to offenders’ mobile phones via text message. The message includes a link to Vaaru Pay, a platform that allows individuals to make payments online, making it convenient for offenders to settle their fines promptly.
