Maldives Police Fine Nine Individuals for Vaping Within a Week of Ban
Just one week after the Maldives implemented a ban on using vapes, the Police have already fined nine individuals for violating the new law. According to a Police media official, these fines, issued by Sunday, amount to a total of MVR 50,000 (approximately USD 3,240).
One of the nine offenders received an additional fine of MVR 10,000 (approximately USD 650) for smoking an e-cigarette while driving a motorcycle. This incident highlights the importance of adhering to both the vaping ban and traffic safety regulations.

Fines for Various Vaping-Related Offenses
The Tobacco Control Act, which came into effect on December 15, outlines the following fines for vaping-related offenses:
- Using vapes: MVR 5,000 (approximately USD 325)
- Distributing vapes: MVR 10,000 (approximately USD 650)
- Selling vapes: MVR 20,000 (approximately USD 1,300) plus an additional MVR 10,000 (approximately USD 650) for each unit sold
- Selling vapes to individuals under the minimum age of 21 for tobacco sale: MVR 50,000 (approximately USD 3,240)
The Police have streamlined the process of paying fines by sending fine notifications to offenders’ mobile phones via text message. The message includes a link to Vaaru Pay, a platform that allows individuals to make payments online, making it convenient for offenders to settle their fines promptly.
