Mexico City Congress Approves Ban on Vapes & E-Cigs
The Mexico City Congress has approved a new law to prohibit the use, production, distribution, and sale of electronic cigarettes, vapes, and similar devices in the capital. The initiative, which passed with 46 votes in favor and 3 against, amends both the local constitution and Mexico City’s Health Law to strengthen public health protections, particularly for young people.
The reform was championed by Morena party deputy Alberto Vanegas Arenas, who highlighted alarming statistics showing that e-cigarette consumption among adolescents nearly doubled in just one year. He stressed that these products contain harmful substances and create addiction, contrary to any perception of them being a safe alternative. “In Mexico City, public health is above any commercial interest,” Vanegas stated.
The new law will sanction all activities related to these devices and also targets illicit fentanyl and other synthetic drugs. While proponents hailed the move as a crucial step to protect youth, some opposition lawmakers, like Patricia Urriza Arellano of the Movimiento Ciudadano party, called the ban a “mistake.” She argued for regulation instead of prohibition to ensure quality standards and to capitalize on a potential tax revenue market that could be worth seven billion pesos annually. However, the majority view was that these devices do not help people quit tobacco but rather create a new, potentially more harmful addiction.
