MOH Malaysia Enforces Tobacco Display Ban, Issues Warnings
The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) has begun issuing non-compliance notifications and warning letters to premises found violating the Ban on Display of Tobacco Products at their Point of Sale counters. The move comes as part of a phased enforcement approach that will continue until October 1, 2024.
Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad announced the enforcement measures during a press conference at the Handover Ceremony of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machines at the ministry. He emphasized that while phased enforcement is ongoing, the ministry will not hesitate to take action against non-compliant parties.
The Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), along with its related regulations and orders, has been in effect since October 1, 2023. The display ban order impacts 51,000 shops selling tobacco products nationwide, with the MOH working to ensure compliance through education and advocacy efforts.
Act 852 encompasses a wide range of regulations, including registration, sales, packaging, labeling, and smoking bans in public places. The MOH has adopted a prudent, wise, and effective phased enforcement approach to ensure compliance with these established controls.
In a separate development, Minister Dzulkefly announced plans for an engagement session with the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) regarding the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 (PCAPA) [Act 723] for private healthcare facilities. The session is expected to take place in the near future.
As the Ministry of Health Malaysia continues to prioritize public health and safety, the enforcement of the tobacco display ban serves as a crucial step in reducing the visibility and accessibility of tobacco products, particularly to young people. The ministry’s commitment to education, advocacy, and enforcement demonstrates its dedication to creating a healthier, smoke-free environment for all Malaysians.
