Netherlands Calls for EU Action to Combat Youth Vaping
The Netherlands is leading the charge in calling for a unified, EU-wide approach to combat the growing problem of youth vaping. In a letter signed by twelve EU member states, Dutch State Secretary for Youth, Sports, and Prevention, Vincent Karremans (VVD), has urged the European Commission to significantly strengthen legislation governing e-cigarettes and other nicotine products across the bloc.
A Comprehensive Plan to Curb Youth Vaping
The Dutch initiative for stricter European regulations stems from the country’s recently published action plan against vaping, which aims to address three key areas:
- Curbing illegal trade of vaping products
- Preventing young people from starting to vape
- Promoting cessation among current vapers
By implementing these measures at an EU level, Karremans believes that member states can more effectively reduce the popularity of e-cigarettes among youth and mitigate the associated health risks.
Harnessing Social Media to Educate and Prevent
In addition to calling for legislative action, Karremans and his European allies are urging the EU Commission to collaborate with social media platforms to combat the sale and marketing of tobacco and nicotine products. They argue that these platforms have a responsibility to actively remove and prevent the upload of content that promotes or facilitates the sale of vaping products to young people.
By leveraging the reach and influence of social media, EU member states hope to raise awareness about the dangers of vaping and discourage youth from taking up this harmful habit.
