Pakistan Halts Vape Crackdown Pending Legislation
The Lahore High Court (LHC) has provided significant relief to vape and e-cigarette businesses in Pakistan, ordering authorities to cease all punitive actions against them until a proper legal framework is enacted to regulate the industry. Justice Anwaar Hussain delivered the ruling in response to over 100 petitions filed by vape dealers and mall owners across Punjab.
The petitioners argued that despite paying customs duties on their products, local police continued to harass them and seal their shops. Justice Hussain’s verdict stressed the constitutional right of individuals to conduct lawful business and questioned how these businesses could be targeted without specific legislation. “Until a legal framework is established, no action shall be taken against the petitioners,” the ruling stated.
During proceedings, Assistant Advocate General Imran Khan informed the court that the provincial cabinet is aware of the health hazards and is currently developing a draft law to regulate vape sales and usage, with plans to include input from stakeholders. The LHC ruling provides temporary but crucial protection for vape businesses, shielding them from administrative action until clear regulatory laws are in place.
