Petaling Jaya Malaysia to Begin Vape Product Registration and Sales Enforcement on April 1
The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will begin enforcing regulations on vape product registration and sales at display counters starting April 1, 2025, according to Selangor public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin. The enforcement of product packaging and labelling requirements will follow shortly after, starting on October 1.
These enforcement measures align with the Smoking Product Control for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), which covers regulations on the registration, sale, packaging, labelling, and prohibition of smoking in public places, including electronic cigarettes.
Jamaliah made these statements during the Selangor State Assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam, in response to concerns raised by Dr Afif Bahardin (PN-Taman Medan) about the sale of vape products near schools and clinics in his constituency.
MBPJ Has Not Issued Any Vape Trader Licenses
Jamaliah emphasized that MBPJ has not issued any licenses to vape traders to operate within the city, and premises found selling electronic cigarettes will be issued a compound. She also noted that the state is cooperating with the Health Ministry and the Selangor Health Department to monitor the use of electronic cigarettes from a health perspective.
Local Councils to Be Involved in Enforcement Operations
In addition to the enforcement timeline, Jamaliah stated that local councils will also be involved in these enforcement operations. MBPJ is set to hold a workshop soon to address the vape issue, and the state will work with the Health Department to monitor the contents of electronic cigarettes, particularly nicotine and other potentially harmful chemicals.
Other measures include supervising the use of electronic cigarettes in public places, especially in schools, hospitals, and food premises, as well as increasing public awareness of the harmful effects of electronic cigarettes through collaboration with community leaders and health volunteers.
As the enforcement dates approach, vape traders and consumers in Petaling Jaya should be prepared for the implementation of these regulations aimed at protecting public health and curbing the prevalence of electronic cigarettes, particularly among youth.
