Polish Finance Minister Considers Raising Excise Tax on Nicotine Pouches
Collaboration with Health Ministry to Analyze Situation and Make Responsible Decisions
Andrzej Domański, the Polish Minister of Finance, informed TVP Info on Tuesday that the Ministry of Finance is considering the possibility of raising the excise tax on tobacco products, such as nicotine pouches, for health reasons. He added that the Ministry of Finance, along with the Ministry of Health, is thoroughly analyzing the situation.
Minister Domański noted that the nicotine concentration in these pouches can sometimes be very high. While the Ministry of Health plays the primary role in addressing this issue, the Ministry of Finance is also closely examining the situation. He pointed out that some refer to these products as innovative, which is an attractive PR strategy, as young people often reach for colorful, single-use products, which can lead to addiction.
When asked if the Ministry of Finance has more tools at its disposal than the Ministry of Health in this matter, DomaÅ„ski stressed the need for cooperation, thorough analysis, and responsible decision-making. He emphasized that it is not the ministry’s role to ban everything, as adults have the right to choose the stimulants they want. However, he acknowledged that young people, sometimes very young, are increasingly reaching for these products.
By considering raising the excise tax on nicotine pouches, the Polish government aims to address the growing concern of youth addiction to these products while striking a balance between individual freedom and public health. The collaboration between the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health demonstrates a commitment to making informed, responsible decisions based on a comprehensive analysis of the situation.
