Poland Senate Approves Ban on Flavored Heated Tobacco Products
The Poland Senate has unanimously approved a bill prohibiting the sale of heated tobacco products with characteristic flavors, without proposing any amendments. The amendment to the Act on the Protection of Health against the Consequences of Using Tobacco and Tobacco Products, also known as the Tobacco Act, aims to implement an EU directive that member states should have been applying since October 23, 2023.
Manufacturers and sellers will have a nine-month transition period to adapt to the new regulations. The Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) supervised the development of these regulations. The bill, which was passed by the Sejm on February 21, will now be sent to the president for final approval.
According to European Commission data, the sales volume of heated tobacco products has surged by 2009 percent in recent years, with their market share in the EU tobacco products market currently standing at 3.33 percent. Meanwhile, the Sejm is also working on another government bill to amend the Tobacco Act, which seeks to restrict the sale of e-cigarettes. The Sejm Health Committee has decided to examine this draft amendment in detail after April 28, following its submission and notification to the European Commission.
