Malaysian State of Selangor Considers Vape Sales Ban
The Selangor state government in Malaysia is set to hold a comprehensive meeting to review the possibility of banning the sale of electronic cigarettes (vapes) within the state. This follows a recommendation from the Deputy Inspector-General of Police and recent moves by other Malaysian states.
Jamaliah Jamaluddin, chairman of the Selangor Public Health and Environment Committee, announced that the upcoming discussion will involve key state bodies, including the Menteri Besar’s office and the State Health Department (JKNS). Crucially, federal agencies like the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), along with local government authorities, will also participate.
The meeting aims to thoroughly examine the potential ban’s implications, considering public health interests, the effectiveness of enforcement, legal frameworks, and the socio-economic impact. Jamaluddin noted that while the federal government regulates vape products under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024, local authorities currently issue general licenses for electronic equipment sales, not specifically for vapes or e-liquids.
Selangor’s review comes after Terengganu announced a ban on vape sales effective August 1. Selangor’s Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, previously indicated the state’s willingness to consider such a ban. The government emphasized that any final decision will be based on detailed study and inclusive consultation.
